“Strike it Rich”

MUSEUM OF HISTORY AND INDUSTRY,
SEATTLE, WA

Objective:

Demonstrate the great risks that people took on when they came west to pursue their fortunes in the Klondike Gold Rush and the wide variety of outcomes of those risks.

Services:

Concept design, research, scriptwriting, graphic design and production.

Description:

On the literal level, the slot machine adds to the saloon atmosphere of the gallery, evoking the Gold Rush time period. On a metaphorical level, the slot machine epitomizes the risk present in historic prospectors’ decisions to seek their fortune in the Klondike. Visitors similarly “gamble” with their fates by pulling the slot machine lever and leaving their destinies up to chance. The reels align to reveal whether they have won big or lost it all, matching them with actual biographies of Klondike people.
